Shelby County Sheriff Newton Johnson reports that on October 19, 2011 at approximately 6:07 p.m. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Vernon Metcalf that there had been a shooting at the residence of Richard Dean on Hwy 147 South of Shelbyville.
Sheriff Johnson dispatched Captain Mike Tollett to that residence along with other units. Captain Tollett arrived on scene at approximately 6:17pm. Upon arrival a white female was found sitting in a pickup on the drivers side with a gun shot wound with what appeared to be with a shotgun. Victim was identified as Vicky Lynn Dean age 37, she was deceased. At the scene in a building behind the main house another body was discovered. The body was identified as Christopher Reagan Smith Jr. 20 years of age and the son of Mrs. Vicky Dean. Mr. Smith had been shot with what appeared to be a shotgun. Mr. Smith was also deceased.
JP 2 Burt Furlow performed the inquest and ordered an autopsy for both victims. Watson and Sons funeral home picked up both bodies.
Richard Vaughn Dean husband of Vicky Lynn Dean was seen by witnesses, leaving the residence at a high rate of speed with his 8 year old son. Witnesses advised that Mr. Dean was headed toward San Augustine County. Sheriff Johnson immediately notified San Augustine County to be on the look out for Mr. Dean driving a 2002 red Mustang. At approximately 8:30 p.m. San Augustine County notified Sheriff Johnson that suspect Richard Dean had tuned himself into the San Augustine County Sheriff ’s Office.
Captain Mike Tollett and Assistant D.A. Ken Florance were dispatched by Sheriff Johnson to travel to San Augustine County Sheriff’s Office and interview Richard Dean. Richard Dean admitted to these officers that he had indeed shot and killed his wife Vicky Dean and step son Christopher Smith.
At this time Mr. Dean was taken into custody and transferred to the Shelby County jail by Sgt. William Lee of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Booked into the Shelby County Jail was 39 year old Richard Vaughn Dean of Center, Texas and was charged with Capital Murder a Felony 1. He has a No Bond per JP2 Furlow.
Also assisting in the investigation was D.A. Linda K. Russell, Texas Ranger Tom Davis, DPS officer Steven Lister, Deputy Lester Pitts, Investigator Rudy Trahan, Capt. Mike Towns and Chief Deputy Phillip Baker. Sheriff Johnson would like to thank all parties that helped in this investigation and especially the concerned citizens and neighbors.
