Police are releasing the name of a man shot to death over the weekend in west Shreveport.
Just before 6:00 a.m. on Saturday Shreveport officers were called to a home in the 6200 block of Buncombe Road to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, patrolmen found 35-year old Nelson Varela inside the residence suffering from a single gunshot wound to the torso. Varela was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives discovered Varela, who lived in the house on Buncombe Road, was apparently involved in a fight with another man during which that person shot him. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant charging 55-year old Larry W. Sims with one count of second degree murder. Sims was caught Sunday afternoon after a tip through Shreveport-Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers led police to him.
The investigation is still ongoing and authorities are working to determine why the two men were fighting. Sims' bond is set at $500,000.
Anyone with any information regarding this case is urged to call Shreveport Police detectives at 318-673-6955 or Shreveport-Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
