BATON ROUGE, LA — A 13-year-old boy was taken into custody for accidentally shooting his 9-year-old stepsister in the head. The shooting happened overnight at a home on Banks Street.
The Baton Rouge Police Department was called to the scene shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30. Before they could reach the destination, however, they were flagged down in the 5800 block of Evangeline Street by a passing vehicle.
Inside of the car was the young girl in critical condition. She was taken to a local hospital by EMS workers and remains there at this time.
Officials tell us that the 13-year-old boy had taken the gun from his mother’s house and brought it with him to his father’s house. His father left for work sometime around 3:00 a.m. and the two children remained at the home in the custody of his wife, the mother of the 9-year-old girl.
We’re told the boy was awake when his father left for work and took out the gun and began playing with it. The gun accidentally discharged and struck his stepsister in the head.
The boy was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center for Negligent Injury and Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.
“Parents need to make absolutely sure that if they have a gun in the house that the gun is secure and away from all children,” Cpl. Tommy Stubbs, Baton Rouge Police Department, noted. “Parents should periodically check to make sure the gun is stored properly.”
No charges have been made against the parents involved in this case.
