Nelson has nearly three decades of experience in his field. He is a consulting industrial meteorologist and founder, president and CEO of Alert Weather Services, Inc.

Nelson received an Emmy nomination from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1990 while at WTVF Newschannel 5 in Nashville, Tennessee.

He has won Associated Press awards for best weather reporting while at WSB TV in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1990, he won Louisiana's AP best weathercast award while working for KATC in Lafayette.
